When we think of a city, we rarely take its industrial areas into account. If cities are living organisms (a frequently-expressed poetic idea), then they should have their own internal organs, areas set aside for providing the imagined city with all the supplies it needs. Industrial parks are one of the areas of Madrid that tend to be ignored by both art and journalism. The idea behind this series is to show this other landscape that, even though it usually lies on the outskirts, forms an indivisible part of city life.
The challenge in creating this series was to portray the industrial landscape by stripping it of its human component, the element that gives it meaning, and doing so using a homogenous tone, despite the variety of locations.
The architecture of industrial estates is, in all cases, purely functional and lacking any superfluous aesthetic attributes. Once we have removed the people, when we depict the buildings, plants, factories and warehouses without the work that goes on within them and which gives them meaning, they become objects that possess a strange, desolate beauty. They are Madrid, too; it´s just that we´ve never seen them before, or at least not like this.
